Jackson Library Checkout Desk, Borrowing Materials

At UNCG Libraries, you may borrow, renew, and order a variety of materials from several different locations. One location is the Jackson Library Checkout Desk, located on the first floor of Jackson Library, at the Elliott University Center-Library Connector entrance facing Stirling St. and the Walker Avenue traffic circle. Most library-owned materials including books, audiobooks, Course Reserves, entertainment DVDs, Instructional Films, and some technology may be borrowed and returned at this desk. Here, you may also pick up and return interlibrary loans, off-site storage materials, and materials on hold, as well as place searches for missing library materials. It serves as the main lost and found and source for obtaining change for Jackson Library.

While UNCG libraries may not own every resource that students, faculty and staff members require, we are able to expand our offerings through interlibrary loan (ILL), a service for borrowing materials free of charge from libraries worldwide. (Please note: ILL does not typically borrow textbooks.) You may pick up your interlibrary loan materials at the UNCG Libraries Checkout Desk. Here is the link to place an ILL Request. UNCG faculty, students and staff who cannot visit campus may request that print materials borrowed through ILL be shipped to their remote address. To request this service, please do so in the Notes field of the ILL request form and provide your current mailing address.

It is worth noting that ILL is only one of the Libraries’ delivery services

Limited technology and equipment is available at UNCG Libraries for students, faculty, and staff to check out. Any equipment borrowed must be returned to the lending desk from which it was obtained. Patrons with a UNCG ID may check out laptops through UNCG Information Technology Services (ITS) 6-TECH to be picked up in the SuperLab. Technology available at the Jackson Library Checkout Desk includes graphing/financial calculators, portable DVD players, USB 3-in-1 charging cables (lightning, micro USB, and Type-C), headsets, microphone headsets, power strips, and memory card readers. The Digital Media Commons (DMC) (covered later in this module) allows for checkouts of camcorders, cameras, tripods, voice recorders, webcams, and related multimedia accessories. The Harold Schiffman Music Library (HSML) offers technology for checkout as well. To borrow equipment patrons must complete the online Technology Lending Agreement. Please be aware that there are fines for overdue technology. Equipment loaned for seven days accrues fines at a rate of $5 per day; equipment loaned by the hour accrues fines at a rate of  $1 for the first hour overdue and .50 for each hour thereafter. There is no grace period on either type of equipment. Seven-day loan items from the DMC and HSML are due 30 minutes before closing on the stated due date; please be advised that these desks close earlier than the Checkout Desk.

UNCG students, faculty, and staff should present their current UNCG ID to borrow materials. UNCG faculty may authorize others to borrow library materials on their accounts. These faculty should complete a Jackson Library Faculty Authorization Request Form for each person they wish to authorize. Two Self Check Express machines are available on the first floor, one at the end of the Check Out Desk and one in the hallway between the Check Out Desk and the tower elevators. Most library books, audiobooks, and DVDs may be borrowed here. After checking out DVDs, they must be unlocked using the devices posted just past the security gates at either library exit.

Different material types have different borrowing periods and limitations. Books from the general stacks are loaned to students and staff until the end of the semester. UNCG faculty may borrow these items until the end of the academic year. Current literature, audiobooks, and paperback books are loaned for 30 days. For more information about borrowing materials, loan periods, and limitations, checkout the UNCG Libraries borrowing materials page

Other than DVDs and technology, borrowers may renew checked out items online using the My Library Account, in person at our Self Check Express machines, or with materials in hand at the Check Out desks. Renewing extends due dates from the date renewed, not the date due.

Online renewals are not possible when:

  • The borrower's account has expired. No renewal due date will extend past the account expiration date.
  • Specific items have been requested by other borrowers.
  • Items have been billed for replacement. (Billed items will be listed under the Charges tab of online accounts and must be returned to the lending library to renew.)

UNCG students, faculty, and staff may check out a locker in Jackson Library free of charge for the current spring, summer, or fall academic term. Lockers are located in the EUC-Library Connector and on selected tower floors, and are limited to one per person. Combination locks are provided and personal locks are not allowed. Here are the locker policies as well as a diagram of locker locations. To register for a locker, fill out a Locker Registration Form, or visit the Jackson Library Checkout Desk. To retain a locker for the next term, renew it online via MyLibrary Account or in person at the Check Out Desk near the end of the current semester. Please be sure to empty lockers by the due dates, lockers are otherwise cleared by library staff at the end of each term.
