Wellington (Coast)

Wellington is the stand-in for Wilmington in Charles W. Chesnutt’s classic novel The Marrow of Tradition, which portrays a fictionalized version of the Wilmington Insurrection of 1898, in which armed White Supremacists overthrew the city’s elected government, murdering hundreds of African-Americans and driving thousands more out of town.
