Tims Creek (Coastal Plain)

Tims Creek, the setting for Randall Kenan’s debut novel A Visitation of Spirits as well as several other stories and novels, is based on Chinquapin, where the author grew up. Tims Creek is a small town centered around a Baptist church, like so many across the state. Kenan infuses the rural setting with magical realism to explore the crossroads of religious, sexual, and racial identity, and the aftermath of what happens when those collide.
