Colleton County (Piedmont/Coastal Plain)

Colleton County, based on Margaret Maron’s native Johnston County, provides the setting for Maron’s Deborah Knott mystery series. Maron describes her detective, Judge Knott, as a “young woman with one foot in the agrarian past and one foot in the urban present,” and the novels themselves as her vehicle “to speak out on the issues” facing North Carolina.
