Stone County (Piedmont)

Stone County is the western Piedmont setting for Tall Houses in Winter and The Scarlet Thread, the first two novels by Doris Betts, who based Stone on her native Iredell County. Fellow NCLHOF inductee Robert Morgan wrote of The Scarlet Thread, "I know of no work of either fiction or nonfiction that portrays that part of the South in the aftermath of the Civil War with more realism, honesty, complexity, compelling narrative, and sensitivity."
