You can also find primary sources in archives and special collections. Archives and special collections are unique because they collect, preserve, and make accessible published and unpublished texts and materials in many formats. They allow researchers to access primary sources directly in order to learn from them.

Did you know that Jackson Library has its own special collections and university archives?

The Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives is located on the second floor of the original Jackson Library building. In addition to the University Archives, which document the history and cultural life of UNCG, it also has manuscripts, rare books, and the Women Veterans Historical Project, amongst other collections. It also has its own libguide and finding aids to help you in your research.

To ensure the Special Collections and University Archive (SCUA) has what you are looking for, it’s recommended that you use the University Libraries catalog and browse SCUA’s website to narrow down your search before visiting the archives in person. You can make an appointment, or visit the Hodges Reading Room, Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm. SCUA also has digitized material you can view online.
