Finding Primary Sources in the Humanities

Special Collections & University Archives at UNCG Libraries

Students in UNCG special collections, Hodges Reading Room

Library special collections and archives allow researchers to interact directly with primary source documents, such as letters, books, photographs, and other physical materials, including clothing and instruments. Some archives and special collections also have digital collections that you can use from anywhere in the world.

UNCG has its own special collections and archive available for researchers to use. The Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) is located on the second floor of the original Jackson Library building. In addition to documenting the history and cultural life of UNCG, SCUA also has manuscripts, rare books, and the Women Veterans Historical Project, amongst other collections.

To find primary source materials available from SCUA,  you can search through the finding aid online. From there, you can narrow down your search by term, record type, and year. Remember that SCUA has both a physical and digital collection, so you will be able to view part of the collection online. You can also gain more information about Special Collections and University Archives by checking out its research guide.

After you’ve searched through the finding aid and found a physical source you would like to see in person, you can request an appointment through this link. Keep in mind that SCUA’s facilities are only open Monday through Friday.

When you visit Special Collections and University Archives to conduct your research, make sure you bring a pencil with you as pens are not permitted. Like most other archives and special collections, the materials at the Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives are non-circulating or “building use only”; this means they are not allowed to be checked out and can only be used in the Researcher Room. Also like most other archives and special collections, food and drink is not allowed inside. This is all done in an effort to protect the archival materials.
