Research is a Process

Why do we do research?

In The Craft of Research, Wayne C. Booth and his colleagues write, “In the broadest terms, we do research whenever we gather information to answer a question that solves a problem” (2016, p. 10). As college students, the research that you do is often meant to answer a question that you developed for an academic assignment. You probably also do research for lots of other reasons: to learn more about something or someone that interests us; to answer a practical question (like which car to buy); to answer questions that come up as we read and become more informed (for school or otherwise); to help us develop an informed opinion on an issue; and for many other reasons!
