Peer Review: Journal Articles

Conclusion:

That completes this short lesson on peer-reviewed articles! When you're searching for peer-reviewed sources in library databases, you can often check a box that limits your results to sources that come from peer-reviewed journals. This can be a great time-saver, but it's still a good idea to keep in mind what you learned in this lesson about the characteristics of peer-reviewed articles. If you come across an article from a peer-reviewed journal that doesn't have formal citations, for instance, it might be a scholar's opinion piece or letter to the editor, which would serve a very different purpose than the research-heavy peer-reviewed articles we are more likely to need for academic projects.
