Open Educational Resources (OER), Creating

Making OER Discoverable and Self-Publishing

Once you have authored your own accessible OER, or made a new edition of an existing OER, and have it hosted and available to the public with an open license, how will others find your work? There are a few services which allow you to share this work in a Google-searchable, discoverable way.

OER Commons

OER Commons hosts resources for all educational levels, K-12 through higher education. By creating an account, you can submit a new OER to be included in the OER Commons. You can also make your content from their OpenAuthor platform available in OER Commons directly within OpenAuthor.

Project CORA (Community of Online Research Assignments)

The site contains multiple, reliable and reproducible research assignments that do not live as isolated entities, but are enhanced by user feedback in order to build a rich corpus of best practices. There is also a Teaching Toolkit featuring a wide range of resource types including pedagogy/theory, assessment, classroom activities, technology tips, subject guides, citation tools, and information literacy tutorials. To submit materials, you can create a free account and upload assignments, modules, videos, and more.

MERLOT

By creating an account, you can submit a new OER for review by a panel of subject experts. If your OER is accepted, it will now be linked in one of the most popular places for educators to find OER. Even though MERLOT does not host all files in the repository, you can submit MERLOT Content Builder pages, along with any files hosted on MERLOT Content Builder.

Be sure to talk to your UNCG library liaison for subject specific repositories and maybe even publish your OER through OpenStax, Pressbooks, or another OER textbook publisher. If you’re interested in publishing an open textbook online, be sure to check out some of these open publishing resources:
