Anatomy of a Scholarly Article

Introduction

The next section may contain similar content to the abstract. The introduction provides relevant background information about the subject by outlining past research on the topic.

A portion of the introduction may be a literature review.  The review showcases many resources about the topic and ties them together by common themes.

The review and/or the introduction may also note gaps in research. The stated problems, limitations, or gaps in research is where the author(s) will justify their own research in helping to resolve the issue. This plan to solve the ‘problem’ is the main point or purpose of the article that will be addressed throughout the rest of the paper.
