Evaluating Images with the DIG Method

Analyze the Image

Once you’ve determined that an image requires more critical thinking, you can begin the first step of the DIG method: analysis. Analyzing an image requires you to make note of all the information you initially perceive: what’s happening inside of it, any text around/inside of it, your reaction to it, and what it looks like.

When analyzing an image, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is happening in this image?
  • How does it make me feel?
  • Is there text surrounding it (captions, text from an article)? What does it say?
  • How is it composed? Do the color, framing, and creative decisions seem intentional? If so, what are those intentions?
